Alan II, Earl of Menteith
Alan II, Earl of Menteith (d. after 23 Aug 1315) was a Scottish Nobleman.
==Life==
Menteith was the son of Alan, Earl of Menteith, and is first noted in an order dated at Carlisle in 1307 to provide foodstuffs ' to the two sons of the Earl of Menteith, and the son of the Earl of Stratherne'.〔Bain, Cal. Docs. Scotland II:523, no. 1971, cites Tower Miscellaneous Rolls, No. 439/23〕 He evidently was an English prisoner, but he either escaped to the Scottish camp or was exchanged for an English nobleman held by the Scots. 'Alan, son of Earl Alan of Menteith' was the beneficiary of the entail by his cousin Duncan of the Earldom of Fife in the event of the failure of lawful heirs in an agreement dated at Crichton, 23 August 1315.〔Barrow, Robert Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland, p. 391. Andrew B. W. MacEwen first noted that the grandfather of Margaret Graham, later Countess of Menteith and wife of Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, was this Earl Alan 'II', and that he had been conflated by other authorities with his father. Cf. the indenture between Robert Stewart, as Earl of Menteith, and Isabella, Countess of Fife dated at Perth on 30 March 1371, in Fraser, The Red Book of Menteith 2:252, no. 34〕 He died some time before 1 August 1323, on which date his uncle Murdoch witnessed a charter as Earl of Menteith.〔National Records of Scotland, Papers of the Erskine Family, GD124/1/1113; cf.
